What is high-risk pregnancy?

Having a baby could be a normal process for a woman, but not all pregnancies will go smooth and as expected. Some women might experience health risk during pregnancies and deliveries. A pregnancy can be risky if the potential complications affect the mother or baby, or both at times.

At Sakra, the women and child department has a special comprehensive unit to provide care and comfort for the mother and child. The obstetrics and gynaecology department is dedicated to offer world-class treatment during pregnancy, women menstrual problems, and much more.

Factors associated with high-risk pregnancy

Certain medical conditions develops during pregnancy harmful for mother or baby, or for both results in high-risk pregnancy. Factors associated with high-risk pregnancy are:

Advanced maternal age - Women getting pregnant at the age of 35 or above

Sedentary lifestyle - Smoking or excess intake of alcohol can result in high-risk pregnancy.

Multiple pregnancy - Pregnancy risks are higher for women carrying twins or higher order multiples.

Medical history - History of chronic hypertension, diabetes, heart disorders, breathing problems, such as poorly controlled asthma, infections, and blood-clotting disorders such as deep vein thrombosis can increase pregnancy risks.

Surgical history - History of surgery on the uterus, including multiple C-sections, multiple abdominal surgeries or surgery for uterine tumors (fibroids), can increase pregnancy risks.

Pregnancy complications - Various complications that develop during pregnancy can pose risks. Examples include Preeclampsia gestational diabetes, abnormal placenta position, fetal growth restriction and Rh (rhesus) sensitization - a potentially serious condition that can occur when your blood group is Rh negative and your baby’s blood group is Rh positive.
