The centre of child health care in Bangalore is equipped with state-of-the-art investigation facilities such as a laboratory, immunohistochemistry, CT, MRI, and Hybrid OT. The operation theatre is world-class with an incorporated Tigris system, the latest electrosurgical equipment, and a laparoscopic set.
Willis Potts - one of the pioneers of pediatric surgery in North America, highlighted these very principles from the preface of his book "Surgeon and the Child" published in 1959 - dedicating it to the newborn baby who has the great misfortune of being born with a serious deformity saying that "if this baby could speak, it would beg imploringly of the Surgeon, please exercise the greatest gentleness with my miniature tissues and try to correct the deformity at the first operation. Give me blood and the proper amount of fluid and electrolytes, and plenty of oxygen to the anesthesia and I will show that I can tolerate a terrific amount of surgery. You will be surprised at the speed of my recovery and I shall be always grateful to you."
For the problems detected during antenatal scans and correctable confirmed diagnosis on postnatal scans like
Yes, true. All the news we hear about anaesthesia is predominantly negative. But we have to put things in perspective. Now we are not trivializing that every single case that happens hits the newspaper headlines is a tragedy for patients and family members. But just to put things in perspective, every year, about 2-3 lakhs or at least 2 lakh patients undergo anaesthesia in Bangalore and probably twice this in Karnataka. So we are looking at 4-5 lakh and hearing isolated incidents, it's not to say that these incidents don't happen, but then we have lessons to learn from them. By large, it is very safe. With experienced hands and good centres, mortality due to anaesthesia has come down, and probably for every 1-2 lakh patients who undergo anaesthesia getting directly affected is rare, as a result of anaesthesia which is very safe. Things have improved dramatically over the last 20 years.
