Poor oral hygiene encourages plaque to form on teeth which cause inflammation of the gums and results in gingivitis. Plaque is an invisible, sticky substance composed of bacteria that forms on your teeth, if not removed it turns into tartar which cannot be removed through brushing and flossing. It affects the gingiva, the part of the gum around the base of the teeth, and causes gingivitis.
The best way to remove plaque is to brush your teeth at least twice per day. Use a soft toothbrush and make sure you replace it at least every two to three months. An electric toothbrush is more effective in removing plaque than a traditional toothbrush.
