Overview
The surgical division of the Sakra Institute of Digestive & HPB (Hepato-pancreato-biliary) Sciences has the following key areas of focus.
Key Areas of Focus
1. Minimally Invasive Organ Preserving Surgery
At Sakra Hospital, the majority of surgical gastroenterology procedures can now be performed by a minimally invasive approach (laparoscopic surgery) with small incisions, quick, painless recovery, and early return to work. All intestinal surgeries (esophagus or food pipe, large intestine), a majority of biliary surgery (gallbladder surgery, surgery of the bile duct), and selected pancreatic surgery are performed by the laparoscopic approach. The next natural step in advanced laparoscopic surgery is to combine the minimally invasive approach with organ preservation to enhance outcomes. At Sakra, with scrupulous planning and expertise, we strive to safeguard the complete organ and accomplish the objective of treating the disease. Organ preserving approaches are an advantage in the surgery of the liver and pancreas where removal of the critical part of the organ leads to a long-term functional disability.
2. Pancreas Care Program
The Pancreas Care Program at the Institute of Digestive & HPB (Hepato-pancreato-biliary) Sciences, at Sakra World Hospital is a comprehensive program for the management of pancreatic diseases with a multidisciplinary team. Pancreatic disorders present a unique challenge to physicians in terms of diagnosis, selecting the most appropriate treatment option, and executing the same with skill and precision using skilled personnel and technology.
3. Bariatric Surgery
There are many types of weight-loss surgery, known collectively as Bariatric Surgery. Gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgeries make changes to your digestive system which would help you to lose weight by limiting your intake of food.
4. Gastrointestinal Oncology Program
The Gastrointestinal Oncology Program undertakes the care of all GI malignancies, including the pancreas, liver, biliary tract, and the complete gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus, stomach, colon, and rectum. A multidisciplinary tumor board reviews the cases and the management strategy for the patient is charted. The team comprises physicians and surgeons with international experience and is renowned nationally for their expertise in dealing with these cancers. All diagnostic facilities with expertise in surgical treatment and /or endoscopic palliation are available in the program. The team of a
surgical gastroenterologist in Bangalore has considerable expertise in procedures such as hepatectomy, Whipple's Procedure, total mesorectal excision, and laparoscopic oncology procedures.
5. Biliary Surgery
Injuries of the biliary tract after cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery) are serious problems that require expertise and understanding in successful management. The surgical team has national and international recognition in the treatment and management of bile duct injury following cholecystectomy. The center is a referral center for the management of these complex problems.
Our expertise is also in the treatment of choledochal cysts (congenital dilatation of the bile passage) in all age groups, apart from other diseases like gallbladder cancer and bile duct obstruction.
6. Liver Surgery
The team has a large experience in performing liver surgery for liver cancers, cancers of the bile duct, and for other liver tumors. Being the top
liver hospital in Bangalore, the center has a skilled team of surgeons, complimented by intraoperative tools (intraoperative ultrasound, USA and Waterjet dissectors, Bipolar radiofrequency dissecting device, etc) to perform a safe and bloodless liver surgery. A well-trained anesthesia team and a well-equipped ICU for postoperative care thus ensure that all major and complex liver surgery is performed safely and successfully.
